It took a little more effort, but I learned from HP support you should ignore the warning of damage during an attempted turn off the printer without any installed printcartridges, because it's actually the best way to transport the printer without ink cartridges that are loaded in the printer.

This step is a hard reset with the printer. Unplug the power cord at the back of the printer and then on the wall. After this please take out the ink cartridges. Once you disconnect the two, wait 30 seconds then plug it back in the printer first, then the wall. I suggest you clean the glass of the scanner with a cloth and glass cleaner.
