One lucky day in , they decided to move their technology departments up to Connecticut, and offered me the choice of severance that is, money or moving out of NYC. Five adult books later, I got the idea for Midnighters.
With its teenage heroes and gothic high school setting, this was clearly a teen book. So I became a teen writer. Some people ask why I decided to become a teen writer. What with Wii, Tivo, and those internets I keep hearing about, do you ever worry that teens will stop reading? Despite all the competition for their time—TV, movies, social networking sites—teens still read a lot more than older age groups. So nyah. Tally has been my favorite character. But then i found out she lives in china.
Mostly your writting is what keeps me reading. I think midnighters is awesome, and If Brad Kerns makes the midnighters tv show, I will cry and never stop. More books from this author: Scott Westerfeld.

Thank you for signing up, fellow book lover! See More Categories. Your First Name. The second area surrounds the New Pretty Town island and includes Uglyville, where Uglies live in dorms , and the Greenbelt, a pleasantly forested area Uglies go to hoverboard and play sports. The third ring surrounds Uglyville and includes the Factory Belt which conceals Special Circumstances Headquarters and the Suburbs, where middle pretties settle down to raise their gardens and families.
The outer edges of the city are home to Crumblyville, where late pretties live, and the Trails, where adventurous citizens can hike through nature without being too far away from the city or a hovercar that can pick them up when they get tired. New Pretty Town even featured a floating ice rink above Nefertiti Stadium until the Crims knocked it down. There is also a hospital where the Operation is performed and where late pretties can arrive via monorail to receive life-extension treatments.
Diego appears to have been built near or on top of the ruins of San Diego. It is located southwest of Death Valley and is close to a Rusty railway. Diego never had the same barriers between Pretties and Uglies the way Tally's city did.
Whereas Tally's city reversed the lesions in firefighters, scientists, and Specials, Diego reversed the lesions in teachers and librarians, ensuring that their citizens were influenced by clear thinkers. Diego had always valued independent thinking, and so greeted the changes the New Smoke brought with enthusiasm. Diego was the first city to admit the truth about the lesions and was the first to offer a "New System" in which citizens, including runaways from other cities, could safely have their bubblehead surgery reversed.
In an unexpected side-effect, repealing the Pretty Committee 's guidelines resulted in an explosion of wild self-expression surge, causing the lines between Uglies and Pretties to crumble. With Diego's help, the New Smoke spread the cure further and faster than ever. This did not escape the notice of Special Circumstances , and Dr. Cable decided that this chaos had to be stopped at any cost, even if she had to start a war.
In the aftermath of the brief Diego War, the Town Hall had been destroyed and its hospital was wrecked. Its government a shambles, Diego turned to the recently-despecialized Cutters to help put the city back on its feet. Looked at one way, the future is kind of awesome. Instead of brushing her teeth, Tally just takes a "tooth brush pill" 1. Once you add in solar-powered hoverboards and bungee jackets and safety fireworks, then we want to go to there. Oh, and of course, there's the pretty surgery; and the surgery that makes the Specials into superhumans. That's sort of the downside of the future. Also, they don't have working roller coasters, so there's that.
One benefit of placing this story in the future is that Westerfeld can talk about issues that we face today, but make them more extreme. So, instead of complaining about pretty people looking down on less pretty people in a school cafeteria, Westerfeld comes up with a version of the future where pretty people and ugly people aren't even supposed to mingle. By reading about an extreme situation, we can see the issues more clearly. Or at least, that's the theory. Also, by placing this story in the future, Westerfeld can comment on our own present by having characters talk about the past.
We and the Rusties have big cities that are clearly connected and not too much wilderness; whereas Tally's world has cities that are smaller and not connected to each other so closely and lots of wilderness. The city vs. That's fun, right? Everyone loves quizzes. But we've still got more to say.
For one thing, the city where Tally is born has real clear divisions between the types of people and where they live. There's Uglyville for uglies; New Pretty Town for new pretties; and Crumblyville for older pretties older pretties are called crumblies, which is what we're calling our parents from now on.
And then there's Special Circumstances, the headquarters for the Specials.
