How does hi lo omaha work

In Omaha hi-lo, the "high" hand is determined exactly the same way as in hold'em or Omaha "high" games like PLO , following traditional hand rankings. The "low" hand requires a little more explanation, especially if you are new to split-pot games or hi-lo poker. First of all, whatever cards you use to make your high hand, that makes no difference when making your low hand.

You can use the same two cards, the other two cards, or any combination just as long as you use two cards from your four-card hand plus three of the community cards to build your five-card poker hand. The rules of Omaha hi-lo is usually played with a "qualifier" for the low hand, meaning all of the cards making up a low hand have to be ranked eight or lower.

That's where the "splitor-better" comes from, a phrase usually added to the name of the game. A qualifying low hand consists of five unpaired cards ranked eight or lower. For the low hand, the ace is considered a low card the lowest , while it can also serve as the highest-ranking card in high hands.

Also worth noting — if your lowest five cards make a straight or a flush, that doesn't matter in Omaha hi-lo, you've still got a low hand if all are ranked eight or lower. In other "lowball" games like no-limit triple draw , flushes and straights hurt you by making your low hand higher, but in Omaha hi-lo that is not the case. A player with this hand would have a good chance of winning both ways.

He or she could also have another high hand better than the straight. The most important thing to keep in mind in split pot games is the big profit difference between winning half the pot and "scooping" it all. It is a lot more than just twice as much. Scooping the pot usually builds a healthy addition to your stack of chips. Getting half usually puts you barely ahead of where you were before you started playing the hand.

Expert Omaha Hi Lo players only play starting hands, like those recommended here, that have a good chance of winning both ways. Omaha is a game of "nuts". With so many players with so many cards, finding so many reasons to play, a final hand with a fairly good high and a fairly good low can easily get clobbered by better hands both ways. So after the flop or maybe the turn, if it looks like you don't have an almost certain winner for one end and a decent shot at the other, or the best high hand with no qualifying low probable, you should usually fold up and wait for the next hand.

The best possible starting hand is AA23 DS. The other starting hands below are randomly listed rather than in power order. That is A, 2, 2, 3, 4 would not qualify because the twos are paired. But A, 2,3,4,5 would qualify, because they are five different low cards. The fact that they make a straight doesn't count against it and the straight could win high. The best low hands are the ones like these that can also win high, because the best high hand and the best low hand split the pot unless the same hand wins both high and low, and takes the whole pot.

Low hands are defined by the highest card, which must not be higher than an 8 to qualify. The "8" hands are the worst low hands, and A is worse than Likewise, all 7 hands are worse than all 6 hands. If there is a "tie" between two players for the top card, then compare the second card in each hand, then the third card, etc.

The first player with a lower card at any level wins. Only if the five cards are all equal do they tie. Paradoxically, it's better to go for low than high, because it's quite possible to have to equal high hands that "quarter" divide twice the high end of the pot, but it's rare that there will be two exact lows. Plus the fact that low straights sometimes win high but high hands almost never win low.

Remember, in all Omaha games, players must use two and only two of their four hole cards in combination with exactly three cards from the board. In the event of identical hands, the high and low shares of the pot will be equally divided between the players with the best hands. In the event that no hand qualifies for low i.
